Learning Within the Spirit of Nature
NUNKUI is a community-centered educational space designed for the Achuar tribe in the Amazon. Rooted in their spiritual connection to nature and ancestral traditions, the project blends vernacular materials with adaptable design strategies to support daily life, storytelling, rituals, and learning. Rather than a singular building, NUNKUI unfolds as a cluster of flexible structures that follow the land’s contours, reflecting a vision of education as a tool for cultural preservation, empowerment, and environmental harmony.
This project explores how architecture can empower indigenous communities through education while preserving cultural identity and environmental harmony. NUNKUI is a community-based educational space designed for the Achuar tribe, the guardians of the Amazon rainforest. They live in deep connection with nature, dreams, and ancestral rituals.
Located on a hill surrounded by a village, river, forest, and airstrip, the site enhances accessibility, safety, and integration with the landscape. Rather than a single structure, the design introduces a cluster of fluid, adaptable spaces centered around an open-air gathering space. These multi-use structures follow the natural contours of the land, allowing daily activities such as storytelling, farming education, crafts, ceremonies, and sheltering during natural events to unfold naturally.
The architecture respects Achuar traditions in form, spaces, and vernacular materials such as bamboo, wood, thatch, mud, and mesh, and introduces semi-discrete systems like modular collapsible walls and adjustable furniture. This flexibility ensures spaces can evolve with the tribe’s changing needs without disrupting cultural rhythms.
Rooted in the tribe’s spiritual worldview, communal structure, and ecological stewardship, NUNKUI rethinks school design not just as a place for education but as a catalyst for cultural preservation, empowerment, and environmental protection. It reflects a future where learning is deeply local, spiritual, and sustainable.
